Hi I’m Reid

People started calling me Doctor Reid years ago, and it stuck—I kinda like it. But you can call me Reid. Welcome to my sandbox.

I hope your visit here is eye-opening, educational, and inspiring, even if you're not my client.

I've been a psychiatrist for a while, and I've seen a lot of broken aspects in our mental health care system. Despite society's technological progress, our mental health seems to be deteriorating.

Why is this happening? What's going on?

The American Psychological Association's Stress in America™ 2023 survey reveals that U.S. society is experiencing significant psychological impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, with notable increases in mental health conditions and chronic illnesses. Adults aged 35 to 44 report the highest rise in these conditions, with economic concerns and financial strain being major stressors. Despite high stress levels, many adults downplay their stress and perceive their health positively, while parents of children under 18 report feeling particularly overwhelmed. The study emphasizes the need to address the lingering psychological effects to promote post-traumatic growth.

Well that’d that were going to explore together  in this sandbox.

This is my sandbox for integrating all the lessons learned along the way in my career so far; what is a better way to support people as they heal and grow?

You are not your diagnosis

Separating illness from identity is crucial in mental health care. While diagnosis plays a role, it constitutes only about 5% of what you need to know for effective treatment. Diagnostic inaccuracies are common, highlighting significant gaps in mental health care. Staging, prognosis, and clear outcomes are often overlooked, contributing to the disarray in psychiatry. If you feel uncertain about a diagnosis, seeking a second opinion is essential—your mental health matters. A diagnosis should never be taken lightly, as it shapes the path to recovery and well-being.

Ask your primary care physician to confirm your diagnosis with a psychiatrist, especially if it was made during a quick 10-15 minute visit. The same applies to a diagnosis from a psychiatrist. If you feel uneasy, confused, lost, or concerned, speak up. Request more time and ask for clarification. If you still feel unsettled, seek another opinion. Your mental health is important.

What do we care about at doctor reid

We are dedicated to helping people recover, no matter what it takes. Our mission is to provide compassionate, personalized care to support your mental health journey. We believe in going above and beyond to ensure you receive the best possible treatment and support. Your well-being is our top priority.

In mental health care, key elements like staging, prognosis, and clear outcomes are often missed. This contributes to the confusion in psychiatry. At our clinic, we aim to fill these gaps and provide clear, comprehensive care.

Compassionate care

At our clinic, we believe in providing compassionate care because people don’t choose mental illness. As Abraham Lincoln said, "Always remember that melancholia is a misfortune, not a fault." We strive to support and understand each individual with empathy and respect, recognizing that mental health challenges are not a choice but a condition deserving of care and compassion.

Applied Neuroscience

It is important to harness applied neuroscience to hack neurotransmitters to your advantage through judicious, proactive, and personalized prescribing. Our approach is informed by both solid evidence and real-world experience, ensuring treatments—whether medication or meditation—are tailored to you. Full recovery takes time, much like physical therapy after an injury. I often prescribe meditation and yoga more than Prozac and Paxil, but every treatment has its place and intention. Together, we'll strive to achieve the most accurate assessment of your unique situation, cutting through the noise of debates and conflicting studies to uncover what’s hindering your ability to thrive.

There is hope

It can get better. We may not see that from underneath the dark clouds of despair, but the winds of grace are always blowing, and it is for us to raise our sails.

Deconstructing the alphabet soup of therapy

Navigating the "alphabet soup of therapy" can be overwhelming, with numerous acronyms like CBT, DBT, EMDR, and ACT representing various approaches. At our clinic, we cut through this complexity to provide treatments tailored to your unique needs. By combining the most effective methods, we create a personalized plan that addresses your specific challenges. This approach ensures that you receive the most appropriate and beneficial therapies, guiding you towards improved mental health and well-being.

Dr Reid’s background

Dr. Reid brings extensive formal therapy training and experience to his practice. He is IFS Level 1 certified (also known as parts work) and trained in Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) by Les Greenberg. His expertise extends to Transpersonal Therapy, CBT, DBT, ACT, and Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy. With deep experience across various medicines and modalities, Dr. Reid has spent considerable time in the trenches, honing his skills. Additionally, he is a trainer of trainers, contributing to clinician training programs at Cedar, Numinus, and Novamind. His insights have reached a wide audience through high-profile talks, podcasts, and training sessions, making him a respected voice in the field of mental health.

Let's get to the common underlying mechanism. As Ram Dass would say, we're sitting around the fire. Beyond the alphabet soup of therapy, here’s what you can expect from me:

  • Connection

  • Corrective experiences

  • Being seen and heard

Together, we'll look inward and keep looking until we find that spark, then we'll fan it until it becomes a fire again.

Go for the gold

It’s not just about symptoms. Cure has become a dirty word in psychiatry. We go for the cure. We go for full recovery.

“It would be an absolute honor to help you create a masterpiece out of the scary blank page of your life” — Reid
